at和 in
　　at
　　我們可以說 be at home（在家），be at work（在工作），be at the office（在辦公室），be at school（上學），be at university（上大
　 　學）， be at an address（在某一地方）， be at a certain point（在某一地點），如 be at the bridge（在橋邊），be at the crossroads（在十字路口）， be at the bus－stop（在公共汽車站）。

　　in
　 　使用in的地方有be in a country（在一個國家），be in a town （在一個城鎮）， be in a village（在一個村莊）， be in a square（在一個廣場上），be in a street（在一條街上），be in a room（在一間房間裏），be in a forest（在一個森林裏），be in a wood（在一片小樹林裏），be in a field（在一片田野裏），be in a desert（在沙漠中）等。在任何有邊界或被圈起來的地方，都可使用in。但講到一個小地方，如a square，a street，a room，a field時，如果我們意指“在這地點”而不是指“在裏面”時，可以在地點前用at。
　 　我們可以說 in a building，也可以說 at a building。 in僅意味著在裏面，at可以指在裏面或者在樓旁庭院裏或者在樓外。如果說某人 be at the station，他可能在車站外面的街上（in the street outside）、在售票處（in the ticket office）、在候車室（in the waiting room）、在車站餐廳（in the restaurant）或者在站臺上（on the platform）。
　　我們可以說 in the sea，也可以說 at the sea。 in/at a river， lake， swimming pool等也一樣成立。
　　這裏in意味著真在水中：
　　The children are swimming in the river．
　　孩子們正在河裏游泳。
　　at the sea/river/lake等意指 near/beside the sea（靠近/在海邊）。但 at sea（不帶冠詞）卻是一個習語，意味著on a ship
　　（在海上航行）。

　　in和into
　　如上所述，in常常指位置。
　　但into指的是移動，表示進入：
　　They climbed into the lorry．
　　他們爬進了卡車裏。
　　I poured the beer into a tankard．
　　我把啤酒倒進了大酒杯裏。
　　Thieves broke into my house．/My house was broken into．
　　盜賊破門闖進了我的家。/我的家被盜賊破門闖入。
　　in或into都可以和動詞put連用：
　　He put his hands in/into his pockets．
　　他伸手到衣兜裏。
　　in也可以是副詞：
　　Come in．相當於：
　　Enter.

　　on既可以用來表示位置也可以用來表示移動：

　　他登上了輪船。
　　在涉及到水平面高低變化的移動時，可以用onto，但這主要用於人和動物：

　　We lifted him onto the table．
